What you witnessed was a springtime swarm. In the spring a colony will cast a swarm about every other year. It's the bee colony's way of reproducing. The swarm will hang on a limb for a few hours to a couple of days and then move to a permanent location. Normally, the parent colony that cast the swarm is within a 100 yards or so.
